India Gaming Market-Data Glossary: IAP, IAA, Downloads and RMG

Last updated: 2026-07-12

Summary: The same India gaming story may contain downloads, active users, in-app purchases, advertising revenue, and RMG estimates. They measure different things.

Core labels

Label Plain-English meaning Do not confuse it with
IAP Purchases made inside a game, such as digital content or features A cash stake, deposit, or prize pool
IAA Advertising revenue generated inside an app User spending
Gross revenue Revenue before stated deductions Net receipts kept by a developer
Downloads Estimated installs during a period Unique people or active users
Active gamers People estimated to have played during a defined window Paying users or registered accounts
RMG Real-money gaming involving money or value at stake Every card, social, or mobile game
Forecast A modelled future estimate An audited current result

Why this matters now

MIXI Global Investments’ July 2026 report estimates India’s non-RMG mobile-gaming market using several data and revenue inputs. Its methodology says Sensor Tower revenue figures cover estimated app-store IAP and exclude advertising, third-party Android sales, and direct web payments; the report then uses additional estimates to discuss combined IAP and advertising revenue.

That is why two legitimate figures can differ: they may measure different revenue streams or distribution channels.

Three misleading comparisons to avoid

1. Downloads versus people: one person may install more than once or use more than one device, while app-store estimates apply their own deduplication rules.

2. IAP versus stakes: buying digital content is not automatically the same transaction as staking money on an uncertain outcome.

3. Market forecast versus company result: a sector projection cannot be attributed to a named operator without that company’s own disclosure.

The regulatory vocabulary remains separate

Official Indian materials distinguish e-sports, online social games, and online money games. Market-research shorthand such as RMG can help describe a sector, but only the applicable law, rules, and official records answer product-specific regulatory questions.

Reader checklist

  • Find the report date and measurement period.
  • Check whether the number is actual, estimated, or projected.
  • Identify included platforms, stores, regions, and revenue streams.
  • Look for exclusions, especially RMG and third-party Android distribution.
  • Keep sector estimates separate from company filings and official records.
